Letter to Future Lang 120 Students

Dear Future Lang 120 Student,

Welcome to what is most likely your first language and writing course that you will take at the college level. For some of you, this is dreadful, for others this is exciting. In my personal experience as “not the strongest writer” I was a bit fearful of how this class would go for me. That being said, my experience in Lang 120 with Professor Brian Graves was exactly the opposite. This classroom is such a comfortable learning environment where you never feel as though you are too far below the expectations to succeed.

This class is unlike any other class I have taken thus far in college or highschool. It is without a doubt an “you get out of it what you put into it” sort of class. However, the things that you have the potential to learn in this class can make huge improvements in your writing and are applicable to writings you will complete beyond Lang 120.

Within this ePortfolio, you will see the two major projects that I have worked on throughout this semester. The first one being an Exploration Project and the second being an Investigative Project. The Exploration Project showcases my personal writing journey and how my past writing experiences have influenced who I am as a writer today. The Investigative Project was where a lot more of what I learned within this class came into play. The use of genre and the understanding of discourse communities were two things that were crucial to this project. I had never even heard of a discourse community before this class and my understanding of genre was very minimal. These two things alone will be very beneficial to my future in academic writing.

All things aside, if you are stressing over Lang 120, there really is no reason to. The concepts you learn are to help you grow as a writer and will be so helpful in all of the writings you complete for the remainder of college. When I look back at my writings from highschool and even in my first semester classes the difference is night and day. The works I create now are much more polished and complete.

Relax and enjoy it,

Avery Lefebvre
